Suspect in Kansas shooting transferred from Jackson following arrest

LAWRENCE, Kan. (AP) — A suspect in a shooting death in Lawrence has been transferred back to Kansas after being arrested in Tennessee.

Andrel Darnell Spats Jr., 19, was arrested Oct. 6 in Three Way, Tennessee. He was booked into the Douglas County Jail on Sunday evening and is being held on $1 million bond while awaiting formal charges, the Lawrence Journal World reported.

He is the second suspect in the death of 21-year-old Christian Willis in central Lawrence on Sept. 8.

Javier Romero, 18, has been charged with first-degree murder and possession of marijuana with intent to distribute.

U.S. Marshal Tyreece Miller announced the capture of Andrel Spates Jr., for First Degree Murder for a homicide that occurred in Lawrence, Kansas in September of 2021.

On September 17, 2021, the Lawrence Police Department requested the assistance of the U.S. Marshals Kansas Fugitive Apprehension Task Force (KFATF) in locating and apprehending Spates on a homicide warrant.

On October 5, 2021, the Two Rivers Violent Fugitive Task Force (TRVFTF) in Jackson received information and a request from the KFATF to apprehend Spates who was believed to be in Madison County.

The TRVFTF went to an address on Sable Wood Cove in Three Way to locate Spates. After several minutes, Spates came out of hiding from the house, and he surrendered to task force officers without incident. The Madison County Sheriff’s Department responded and transported Spates to the Madison County Jail.
