(October 7, 2013) Washington- The Supreme Court convened today, the first Monday in October, even amidst the government shutdown.
Chief Justice John Roberts opened the new term with no mention to the new healthcare law of the government shutdown.
The Court began the term by turning down multiple appeals. One of the cases in the rejection pile is an appeal from former Newark Mayor Sharpe James.
According to the Associated Press, James was convicted of “illegally steering sweetheart land deals” to his mistress at the time. He was sentenced to 27 months in prison.
The Supreme Court decided not to hear the appeal in the case that struck down Virginia’s anti-sodomy law.
The Court also decided not to hear an appeal from a Florida case that, according to the AP, made it easier for sick smokers to sue tobacco companies.
