On September 15, 2025, Delta State University announced the tragic death of 21-year-old student Demartravion “Trey” Reed from Grenada. According to university police Chief Michael Peeler, Reed was discovered hanging from a tree near the pickleball courts on the central campus around 7 a.m. Monday.
University President Daniel Ennis expressed profound sadness, stating, “The Delta State community is heartbroken by this loss. Our thoughts are with Trey’s family and friends during this difficult time.”
The Bolivar County coroner’s office is handling the investigation, and medical examiners are working to determine the cause of death. Further details will be released once the investigation is complete, Peeler noted.
In response to the tragedy, the university canceled all classes and activities on Monday, including events planned for its centennial celebration. President Ennis is consulting with campus leadership to decide if classes will resume on Tuesday.
Support services, including counseling, have been made available to students and staff. The campus chapel is open for prayer, and a prayer service is being organized to honor Reed’s memory. Authorities have confirmed that the campus remains safe.
