‘COVID-19 has hurt our sales’ – local restaurant opened 1 month before pandemic slowed economy

When the American Kitchen & Grille, 1100 Whitehall St., opened in February, Vanity Butler had no idea what the next month would bring.

“COVID-19 has hurt our sales,” said, Butler, who owns the restaurant, “We’ve had employees from the Jackson and Madison County School System supporting us, and we have been getting patrons from the different factories.

“We also deliver.”

Menu items include catfish, fried and grilled chicken, salmon, steaks – ribeye and New York Strip – greens, fried cabbage maccorni and cheese, peach and strawberry cobbler, and Heath bar cake.
Customers are also calling for to-go orders.

Business hours are 11 a.m. to 7 p.m., Monday through Thursday; 11 a.m. to 9 p.m., Friday and Saturday, and 11 a.m. to 5 p.m., Sundays.

Seating is available for 180 in the 5,500-square-foot facility, and the restaurant is the third tenant in the 18,000-square-foot retail center on the southeast corner of Dr. F.E. Wright Drive and Whitehall Street.

The restaurant also offers an outdoor patio.

Loving Arms, LLC, a provider of in-home living assistance for senior citizens, and Dove Family Dentistry, also lease space in the complex known as Bre Avenue at Madison Place.

Jackson Chamber announces 42nd Leadership Jackson class participants

The Jackson Chamber is pleased to announce the nominees selected for its 42nd Leadership Jackson class. Leadership Jackson is a leadership development program for community members who demonstrate leadership potential. Sponsored by the Jackson Chamber, the program is an opportunity for local professionals to learn more about the community and its challenges.

The class will participate in a one-hour video conference meeting from October – February and begin in-person full-day sessions in early March. Leadership Jackson Chair Russ McKelvey, branch manager, Mack Pest Control, Inc. and Vice-Chair Nick Hayes, general manager, Hiller Plumbing • Cooling • Heating • Electrical will direct the sessions.

“This is going to be a special year for Leadership Jackson,” says McKelvey. “The challenges that make us uncomfortable create an environment of growth and learning. It’s a time in our world where we need strong leaders as much as ever. The 42nd class faces a unique experience that no other class has had. We embrace this year’s challenges and look forward to what the new class will find. It’s a journey that will create great relationships and a new perspective for all involved. This group will be a lot of fun as we take them through another successful year of Leadership Jackson.”

Rental management company renovating building on Hollywood Drive

Michael Jenkins, owner of J&M Properties, hopes to turn a vacant building at 154 Hollywood Drive into an office where renters can lease property or make rental payments.

Jenkins owns about 45 rental properties in Jackson.

According to the Jackson-Madison County Register of Deeds, he purchased the facility from the Plumbers and Pipe Fitters Local Union 6 Trustees of the Building Committee of United Association of Plumbers and Pipe Fitters for $45,000.

The building consists of about 2,400-square-feet, and Jenkins said he hopes to have the facility operational in early fall.

“It is always the hope of the city to take vacant buildings and restore them,” said City Councilwoman Marda Wallace, District 7, “This is continues to show the progress being made in the LANA and downtown Jackson area.”

Wallace also serves on the Planning Commission Board.

Business Spotlight – CEO Todd Swims celebrates 30 years at Leaders Credit Union

Leaders Credit Union, a member-owned financial cooperative based in Jackson, Tenn., is pleased to congratulate President and CEO Todd Swims on thirty years of service at Leaders Credit Union.

According to a press release from Janet Wylie – Marketing Specialist – Leaders Credit Union – Swims began work at Leaders in September of 1990 at 26 years of age in the member solutions department. After two years with the organization, Swims was promoted to his current role as President and CEO.

In 1990, Leaders Credit Union, known then as Jackson Madison County Teachers Credit Union and served 7,381 members. Leaders now serves over 55,000. In 1990, Leaders had one Jackson location.

In 2020, Leaders is all across West Tennessee with eight traditional branches, a mortgage center, corporate office, and a corporate culture center with a dedicated digital and call operation center.

Jamaican & African Cuisine relocating to Vann Drive

An opening date has not been announced, but Jamaican & African Cuisine is relocating to 289 Vann Drive.

The restaurant at 101 Carriage House Drive is temporarily closed.

Jamaican & African Cuisine opened May 26, 2016.
