Sam Turner selected as new City Councilman for District 1; fills unexpired term of Gary Pickens

Sam Turner, a Jackson resident since 1978, has been selected by members of the Jackson City Council to fill the unexpired term of Gary Pickens – District One.

The election was held during the Jackson City Council’s monthly meeting at City Hall, Tuesday.

“I’ve lived a life of service for my entire life, working at Jackson Energy Authority and in private industry, working with municipals and county government and utilities,” Turner said, “I’m now retired and I feel like I have this opportunity to give back to the city of Jackson.

“We stand on the precipice of growth, and I feel like there is a great opportunity for people to lead and serve the community.

Turner, who said he will run for re-election in May 2023, was selected over Ricky Brown and Kipp Hornburger.

“I had several (people) reach out to me and say I would make a good candidate,” Turner said, “I’m still healthy, I’m still able to … to do a lot of things, and use the skills I’ve acquired over a career with Jackson Energy Authority and private industry.”

Turner, who was nominated by David Cisco, received seven votes from council members and Brown, who was nominated by Ernest Brooks II, received one vote.

Sabrina Blue withdrew her application.

Turner believes his skills and experience he acquired during his career at Jackson Energy Authority and work in the private sector as a business consultant will allow him to use this knowledge as a member of the Jackson City Council.
