Keith Nerren has hopes of returning with more than he delivers, when the Jackson City Carrier with the United States Postal Service, runs his route, Saturday.
Nerren and the National Association of Letter Carriers (NALC), will be participating in the nation’s largest single-day food drive to help Stamp Out Hunger.
The 27th annual event benefits the Regional Inter-Faith Association (RIFA), 133 Airways Boulevard.
“We will picking up non-perishable items for RIFA when we run our regular routes – even if it is raining,” Nerren said, “They can put the items in a bag in the mailbox, or next to the mailbox, as long as they are visible. We will pick them up, and deliver them to RIFA.”
The items will be sorted, bagged and distributed.
According to a press release, RIFA served over 497,000 meals to the hungry in the Jackson community in 2018.
Over 77,000 hot meals to the homeless, the disabled, the elderly, the working and non-working poor in the Jackson community were served through the Soup Kitchen at RIFA.
The Snack Backpack ministry provided 232,164 meal to elementary school students.
School Food Pantries provided 16,323 meals to middle school students, and the Food Bank distributed 104,115 meals to over 20 organizations.
Over 25,000 meals were distributed to senior citizens.
Feeding America estimates 18.9 percent of the population of Madison County is food insecure.
