The topics were predictable, but Jimmy Harris, mayor of Madison County saw the positives, after listening to candidates running for public office speak during the annual Southwest Tennessee Development District’s Legislative Luncheon at the Aeneas Building, Wednesday.

“We were able to find out more about the candidates,” Harris said. “But it’s not just West Tennessee. It’s Tennessee as a whole, and it all begins with public education.”

Candidates running for the U.S. Senate, Congress and Governor of the state of Tennessee also discussed the Memphis Regional Megasite in Haywood County, jobs, infrastructure and drugs.

“It’s really important who we send to Washington and who we send to Nashville to govern, and be responsible and make decisions that are going to change everyday American lives, and everyday Tennesseans lives,” Stephen Fincher said. “We have too many people who go into public service who do not care about anything but getting re-elected over and over. They don’t care about fixing actual problems.”

From Crockett County, Fincher served as a U.S. Representative for Tennessee’s 8th Congressional District from 2011 to 2017.

He is running for the U.S. Senate seat held by outgoing Senator Bob Corker.

“We keep talking about the Megasite, Interstate 69, infrastructure, jobs and education in West Tennessee,” said Ed Jackson, state Senator from Jackson. “The governor (Bill Haslam) finally gets it (and) we are finally getting in position where West Tennessee is recognized where we need some help.”
