Petition to recall School Board member Doris Black turned in at Election Commission

The possibility of a recall election became probability, Friday.

Sherry Franks and former School Board member David Clifft submitted 1,181 petitions to the Madison County Election Commission, and if 1,151 names are verified, a recall election for Doris Black, District 4, Position 1, of the Jackson-Madison County School Board could be held as early as December.

“I not on the PTF, not on any part of any organized group – except for parents that are disappointed significantly in our school board,” Sherry Franks said, “We’re very encouraged, and I’m encouraged by the number of people that once they found what is going on, they want to actively get involved.”

Franks said the movement of getting more people to sign a petition has not ended.

“We have more coming in,” Franks said, “We want to give everybody the opportunity to sign if they want to – even if the petition has been submitted.

“One of the things about that North Region is, you have a lot of private school parents, who have not been involved … but it does have an effect, and people are wanting to do something.”

But this is only the first step.

“Once we get a ballot date, we are going to mail everybody and tell them where their election location is and when the election will be,” Franks said.

Kim Buckley, administrator of elections, said the next phase is to verify each signature.

“There has to be a valid signature of a registered voter that lives in that district,” Buckley said, “They have to be living at the address we have on their voter registration card.”

Black, who received 1,743 votes in the Aug. 2, 2018 election – could not be reached for comment.

The 1,151 signatures on the petition is 66 percent of the vote Black received, and the required number of signatures needed for a recall.

Buckley didn’t give a specific date when the election could be held.

“We will call an election committee meeting, and a notice will be placed in our local newspaper,” Buckley said, “And then the election commission will meet and set a date.”
