Two of the four anchor stores at the Old Hickory Mall – Macy’s and Sears – received a reprieve after they were not on a most recent list of store closings nationwide.
A third anchor, JCPenney, announced it is closing about 140 stores, but the list of stores has not been posted.
Early retirement at JCPenney will be offered to 6,000 eligible associates, while the closures will force others to lose their jobs completely.
Macy’s at the Old Hickory Mall is not on the list, but the retailer is closing 68 stores and cutting as many as 10,000 jobs.
The 68 store closures result in the layoff of as many as 3,900 employees, and another 6,200 jobs will be cut throughout the company, mostly at the management level.
Remember the slogan, “Sears, it’s where America shops.”
Sadly, it appears it’s where America used to shop, considering the retailer is shuttering 42 stores.
Sears also owns Kmart, which has a store in Jackson at 732 Old Hickory Blvd.
The company is scheduled to close 108 Kmart locations, but Jackson is not on the list.
Company officials declined comment on the announcements.
