Mayor Scott Conger, Police Chief Thom Corley and Jackson Recreation and Parks Director Tony Black held a press conference on Wednesday at North Park. The conference came following two violent incidents that occurred on Monday and resulted in one person being shot.
Increasing patrol cars, installing permanent cameras and lights, and conducting regular risk and safety assessments inside of all city of Jackson parks are the first steps being taken towards creating a safer environment.
“I am a lifelong resident of this town and parks were a huge part of my life growing up,” said Corley. “I think every child in the city deserves to have great memories of being at a park and we are going to ensure that happens.”
Closing off parts of the parks that aren’t utilized often and correctly is another step that the city is taking to try and deter violence.
Park pep rallies are an additional effort geared to encourage people to utilize the parks and improve the overall environment.
Officials expressed that they cannot fix this issue alone, and need the help of the community in reporting and addressing gun violence.

Lindsey Young, a mother who was at North Park during the incidents, expressed her concerns with accountability during the press conference.
“I want to be clear that I am holding you to your word,” said Young. “The community is doing its part. I did my part this week when I laid on top of children. Now I need the city to do its part.”
The investigation into the incidents is still ongoing. If you have any information, contact JPD at 731-425-8400 or Crime Stoppers at 731-424-8477.
