Mike Keith, ‘Voice of the Tennessee Titans’ visits Jackson Old Hickory Rotary Club

Less than 48 hours after the National Football League’s Draft ended, Mike Keith had a lot to talk about when he was the guest speaker at the Old Hickory Rotary Club’s weekly meeting at the Greater Jackson Chamber of Commerce, Monday.

Known as the ‘Voice of the Tennessee Titans,’ Keith discussed in length the Draft, where the Titans selected six players highlighted by Peter Skoronski, an offensive guard from Northwestern with the 11th pick in Round 1, and University of Kentucky quarterback Will Levis in Round 2 with the 33rd selection overall.

“All my friends … are like, why didn’t you take this guy or why did you take this guy … what are we doing – are we going to sign a free agent – who are we trading for?” Keith said, “And you might think, to a certain extent, that that would be a bit annoying.”

But Keith, who was hired as the announcer of the Tennessee Titans in 1998, said it was anything but.

“It’s 100 percent opposite,” Keith said, “We started this thing. When we were playing in Memphis (Tennessee Oilers) … at Vanderbilt … we dreamed of the day when everybody would want to know everything about our Draft class.

“We dreamed of the day when people would argue about what we should or shouldn’t have done.

“We dreamed of the day getting to come to Jackson, Tennessee the Monday after the Draft.”

Keith said the Titans had its eye on Levis, but Skoronski, who Keith said was one of three best players overall in the Draft – was available.

“Our offensive line was not fabulous last year,” Keith said, “This (Skoronski) was fabulous. One of the three best players in the Draft. To plug him in, and if he’s not a starter, it’s a surprise.”

Keith said Levis – a projected Round 1 selection – remained on the Draft board, and the Titans pounced in Round 2.

“The Titans were trying to trade back in to the first round,” Keith said, “The problem was, other teams wanted too much.

Keith said Pittsburgh drafted first on Friday night, but a quarterback was not the selection.

“Arizona is up again,” Keith said, “We traded with Arizona … and what we gave up … our No. 2 pick, we backed up nine spots in the third round and we traded our third round pick next year.”

That’s when the Titans selected Levis.
