Memphis-area Man Charged with Identity Theft

MEMPHIS, Tenn. (AP) — Authorities say a Memphis-area man is facing charges after he stole the identities of more than 500 people.

The Shelby County Sheriff's Office said Tuesday that Mareco Bell is being held in jail on $20 million bond on charges of identity theft and identity theft trafficking.

According to the sheriff's office, deputies searched Bell's home in the Cordova suburb and found fake Tennessee driver's licenses, fraudulent tax returns and debit cards with pin numbers.

Evidence has been turned over to the Internal Revenue Service and the Secret Service for possible federal charges.

The sheriff's office says the investigation is ongoing and additional charges and arrests are likely.

Online court records do not show whether Bell has a lawyer.
