For the mayor and four members of the Jackson City Council it was the end of an era, Tuesday.
Mayor Jerry Gist, who took office July 1, 2007, and council members Charles ‘Pepper’ Bray, Vicky Foote, Charles Rahm and Randy Wallace are retiring June 30.
“This council has approved – just this past year – over 400 people who have served on various commissions, boards, committees (and) task forces, Jerry Gist said, “Some of them are here (today) who have served so well.
“Also, the great city employees and staff of this city, they are absolutely remarkable. I have thoroughly enjoyed working with them, and they hard working, dedicated people who want to see this city continue to prosper and to grow.
“It has been my honor to serve as your mayor. We have been truly blessed; we have been truly blessed by God and the city to be where we are today … I appreciate this council, and I appreciate the honor and privilege serving as Mayor.”
Pepper Bray served on the City Council from July 1, 1999 to June 30, Vicky Foote, July 1, 2011 to June 30, Charles Rahm, July 1, 2003 to June 30, and Randy Wallace, July 1, 2007 to June 30.
With business to attend to, the City Council approved the FY 20 Budget Ordinance – 9-0 – with no changes made from the special called May 21 first hearing with unanimous approval.
The City Council approved the Jackson-Madison County School System’s pre-development agreement to build two new schools – Madison Academic High School on the campus at the University of Memphis Lambuth, and a new Jackson Central-Merry High School and Middle School.
The vote was 8-1.
The City Council voted 6-3 in favor of an agreement from Margaret Harrison to move the Rockabilly Hall of Fame from 105 Church St., to the Legends of Tennessee Music Museum at the Carnegie, 305 East College Street.
