Manchester Headed Toward Prescription Requirement

MANCHESTER, Tenn. (AP) — The Manchester board of mayor and aldermen have given initial approval to requiring a prescription for some cold medicines.

Over the counter remedies that include pseudoephedrine are abused by people who make methamphetamine with the ingredient.

The proposal passed on first reading, despite an opinion from the University of Tennessee Municipal Technical Advisory Service that such local ordinances are legally suspect.

The Chattanooga Times Free Press reported the aldermen vote 4-2 in favor this week. Two more votes are required for adoption.

The idea is gaining traction in other cities. In Dresden, officials passed a similar ordinance this week and called on the Tennessee General Assembly to pass a statewide prescription-only requirement for the pills.
