The Jackson-Madison County Regional Health Department joins the American Dental Association (ADA) in recognizing February as National Children’s Dental Health Month.
According to a press release from Mallory Cooke – Public Information Officer, Jackson-Madison County Regional Health Department – the month-long national health observance brings together dental professionals, health care providers, and others to promote the benefits of good oral health to children and adults.
This year’s slogan is “Fluoride in water prevents cavities! Get it from the tap!” Studies show
fluoride in community water systems prevents at least 25 percent of tooth decay in children
and adults, according to the American Dental Association.
Children should brush twice a day for two minutes. We encourage parents to make sure their
child is seen regularly by the family dentist. “It’s important for children to learn how to
properly take care of their teeth, so they’re able to prevent decay going into adulthood,”
Kristin Bodiford, RDH, said.
Dental hygienists will spend most of the month screening, applying sealants as well as
fluoride for students at Lincoln Elementary School.
The American Dental Association offers the following tips for maintaining a healthy smile:
- Brush your teeth twice a day with fluoride toothpaste
- Clean between your teeth daily
- Eat a healthy diet that limits sugary beverages and snacks
- See your dentist regularly for prevention and treatment of oral disease
