NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) — Gov. Bill Haslam is recognizing 168 Tennessee schools for their achievement and growth.

Haslam and Education Commissioner Kevin Huffman lauded them this week as the 2013-2014 Reward Schools, the top 5 percent of schools in the state for academic achievement and the top 5 percent for annual growth.
Among schools in West Tennessee recognized in the report were Denmark Elementary, Madison Academic and South Side High in Madison County. Haywood Middle School in Brownsville also made the list.

The schools span 49 districts across the state and include 90 schools that serve mostly economically disadvantaged populations.

This year’s list recognizes 67 schools for overall academic achievement and 84 schools for annual growth. The list also names 17 schools that earned both designations.
