A shuttered elementary school became the property of Lane College following a unanimous vote by the Jackson City Council, Tuesday.
Lincoln Elementary School, 425 Berry Street, becomes part of what Lane College officials call a strategic plan of a 10-block initiative referred to as ‘The Miracle Mile.’
“The possibility of inclusion of the former Lincoln Elementary School building into our vision is critical for completion to our overall strategy,” said Richard Donnell, “The use of the building fits perfectly with our desire to have a (center) to train our student teachers … once the certification is approved by the state, as well as serve our students and our east Jackson citizens in a regular cultural, enrichment and intellectual program we plan to establish.”
Donnell, senior advisor to the school’s president, said Lane College would be able to increase instructional classroom space, use it as a recreational facility and a multi-purpose community center – for the college, east Jackson community and neighborhood.
He also said part of the facility could be used as a computer access center, which, in some cases, would be the only access a student would have to a computer during the day.
“Lane College cannot do this alone,” Donnell said, “We will need partners to make projects viable.
We want to be inclusive, not exclusive.”
