Last second UK basketball win at LSU has Union University connection

When the University of Kentucky’s Malachi Moreno hit a game-winning 18-foot jump shot for 75-74 win at the buzzer at LSU, Wednesday, it might have brought back a few memories for those associated with the Union University men’s basketball program.

Malachi Moreno’s father, Enelio, a 6-6 forward from Manizales, Columbia, played for the Bulldogs for two seasons.

2000-01 (sophomore) second on team with 13.0 points per game (455 total points) and 10.1 rebounds per game (355 total rebounds, played in all 35 games.

1999-01 (freshman) 7.7 points per game (216 total points) and 7.1 rebounds per game (198 total rebounds), played in 28 of 33 team games.
He played two years and transferred to Georgetown College in Kentucky.

Before signing with UK, Malachi, a seven-footer, played and graduated from Great Crossing High School in Georgetown, Kentucky, which is about 16 miles from Lexington.

A photograph – 2000-2001 season – Union’s sports information department passed along shows Enelio, No. 45, and David Niven, second from left, back row, who is now the head basketball coach at Union.
