Keith Sherley receives School Bell Award from Tennessee Education Association, Friday

Keith Sherley will be a recipient of a prestigous Tennessee Education Association School Bell Award, when ceremonies are held at the Embassy Suites by Hilton SE in Murfreesboro, at 11:30 a.m., Friday.

TEA’s School Bell Awards honor media representatives for their coverage of education news and issues – as well as the tremendous role they play in shaping public opinion – while recognizing outstanding contributions to the interpretation of issues facing public schools, and to the advancement of understanding and support for public education.

Sherley, news director and on-air personality at NEWS/TALK 101.5 FM will receive a School Bell Award in the radio category.

“The Tennessee Education Association is an outstanding organization that represents the integrity and morals of teachers and administrators,” Sherley said. “I am grateful to them for their recognition of my work as a journalist reporting on public education.

“There’s no greater work being done in communities across the state than what’s taking place in classrooms every day.”

David Clifft, a 24-year member of the Jackson-Madison County School Board, said he wrote a letter of recommendation for Sherley.

“I’ve always said Keith is fair and accurate,” Clifft said. “He handles his on-air calls with dignity and he’s always taken up for the school system … defending the school system when we needed defending, but more than anything – he is fair and accurate.”

A special committee of individuals, from inside and outside the profession, who are familiar with criteria for evaluation of the services of the media, made the recommended selections.

School Bell Award recipients will receive an inscribed brass school bell.

“Keith’s reporting on education issues speaks for itself,” said TEA President Barbara Gray. “He has invested countless hours attending school board meetings, interacting with education stakeholders, teachers and parents. He has earned a reputation for credibility, deep understanding and passion for public schools and the local community.”
