Judge Declares Memphis Gang a Public Nuisance

MEMPHIS, Tenn. (AP) — A judge has declared a Memphis crime gang a public nuisance and is banning alleged members from gathering together in an embattled neighborhood.

Shelby County Judge Larry Potter issued an injunction Monday against the Dixie Homes Murda Gang/47 Neighborhood Crips, a gang that authorities say operates out of a Memphis neighborhood beset by shootings, drug sales and fights.

Shelby County District Attorney Amy Weirich says about 50 alleged gang members have been identified, including six leaders, and a safety zone has been established in the neighborhood.

According to the injunction, the alleged gang members are banned from gathering in public, even in pairs, and face arrest if they do so.

Memphis officials are concerned about crime in the neighborhood located near children’s hospitals and medical facilities, and an elementary school.
