MADISON CO (May 6, 2015) – “The decision is based solely on the fact that I have moved out of my district.”  County Commissioner and Chairman of the Commission Mark Johnstone will announce his resignation at the May 18 County Commission meeting.

Mark Johnstone has served District 9 since he was elected in August of 2002.

Johnstone faced off against incumbent J.T. Dunbar in a Republican Primary and then ran against Pam Carter Betler and Thomas “Bubba” Cook in a General Election. He has served as chairman for three terms of office.

During his time of service Johnstone said, the county has faced many challenging obstacles.   I am proud of my service and the accomplishments said Johnstone.  I feel like I have been a good steward, it has been an honor and a privilege to serve.  Johnstone added, to every thing there is a season and although this one is over at some point in the future there will be other opportunities. I am gone for now but I am not out.

Commissioners will have two positions to fill.  First they will have to elect a new chairman for the county legislative body.  Mark Johnstone replaced Charles Byrd.  Charles Byrd was appointed after Gary Deaton stepped down.

Commissioners will also have to accept the resignation and then accept resumes to fill the seat in District 9 until an election can be held for the position.

The county commission will meet on Monday May 18, 2015.  The meeting is at 8:30 a.m. at the Jackson Madison County Health Department, North Parkway, Jackson
