From the Jackson Police Department –

The Jackson Police Department extends it heartfelt thoughts and prayers to the family of 29-year-old Tyre Nichols, who passed away following a traffic stop by officers of the Memphis Police Department on Jan.7, 2023.

In the next couple of hours, we do expect the Memphis Police to release the video of Mr. Nichols’ encounter with the five former officers of the Memphis Police Department. The injuries suffered by Mr. Nichols and the lack of any of those individuals to intervene is unthinkable.

Based upon the initial release of information, it appears these officers betrayed their own oath of office, dishonored the law enforcement profession and brought shame upon officers across this nation.

The inconceivable behavior of each officer involved has left everyone including our officers at the Jackson Police Department outraged.

Chief Thom Corley and the members of the Jackson Police Department support the swift actions of Chief Davis and the independent investigation by the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation.

Upon release of the video, we, Jackson Police, are asking the citizens of the City of Jackson to consider how far we have come together as a community. It is the Jackson Police Department’s pledge that we will endeavor ot be honest, fair, impartial, courteous, professional and responsive in our fulfillment of our duties to this community.

We, the Jackson Police, have worked tirelessly in the development of pro-active partnerships with the community we serve.

We have been intentional in being transparent and ensuring our officers are professional, loyal and respectful.

We will continue to do so.

Please continue to lift the Nichols’ family, their friends and the entire community up in prayer as the City of Memphis goes through this difficult time.
