Jackson International Food & Art Festival mural unveiled

The Jackson International Food and Art Festival, founded by Eduardo Morales and co-chaired by Dr. Sandra Dee, celebrated when a mural – created by Rose Newhouse – was unveiled at the corner of 301 E. Lafayette Street and Church Street in downtown Jackson, Friday.

The event brought back memories for Eduardo from 12 years ago.

“I was part of committee call the ‘Season of Unity,’ and it came to my mind to do something else to involve all the cultures and with others like food, arts and have a parade of cultures,” Educardo said. “Mrs. Tammy Buchanan and (then) Mayor Jerry Gist supported my idea.”

For Eduardo, he is just as enthusiastic today as he was when he came up with the idea for the festival.

“It means so much,” Eduardo said. “It shows the reality of this country. A lot of people don’t talk about the history – they don’t want to know where they came from; they don’t want to accept that this country is made up of different people who came from different cultures.”
