Jackson gymnast, Kameron Nelson, and his Coach, Charlie Tamayo, represented the Region 8 Men’s Gymnastics Team at the Elite Team Cup, in Greensboro, North Carolina, March 2.
According to a press release, this premier competition, held in conjunction with the American Cup, featured 9 six-man teams from throughout the United States.
These young Elite athletes range in age from 15-to-18. Kameron’s team placed third, their highest finish in the history of the event. Region 8 is made up of athletes from Tennessee, North and South Carolina, Georgia, Florida, Alabama and Mississippi.
Kameron, 17, is a member of Arrow Athletics – gymnastics + family fitness, 1751 Vann Drive, in Jackson.
Kameron, who is a homeschooled high school junior, has qualified for three National Championships and one United States Championship. His goal is to make the US National team and compete in college.
His coach, Charlie Tamayo, was part of the Cuban National team, who won three Pan-American Games. In 2001, Charlie became the first ever Cuban to win a medal at the world level when he won Bronze on the vault at the World Championships. The following year, he won a Gold medal on vault at the World Cup. Charlie has coached both men’s and women’s competitors at all levels up to Elite.
Charlie is uniquely capable of mentoring Arrow’s athletes that are being recruited by college programs.
Kameron, along with the rest of the Arrow athletes, will complete their season with their respective state meets in March, followed by Regional and National competitions in April and May.
