The Jackson Generals claimed their second Southern League Championship in three years with a 3-2 win over Biloxi at MGM Park, Saturday.
The Generals, the Double-A affiliate of the Arizona Diamondbacks won the best-of-five series, over the Double-A affiliate of the Milwaukee Brewers, 3-1.
(NOTE: The franchise has now won three Southern League titles – each with a different affiliate – since moving to Jackson in 1998. They won the 2000 championship as the Double-A affiliate of the Chicago Cubs, and the 2016 title as the Double-A affiliate of the Seattle Mariners)
A pinch-hit double by Evan Marzilli scored Marty Herum with game’s winning run in the top of the ninth.
The Generals – who won three straight after losing game one – took a 2-0 lead in the top of the first when Kevin Medrano parked a two-run shot that scored Ben DeLuzio, who led off the inning with a single.
Emilo Vargas struck out eight and allowed one run and allowed four hits in five innings of work.
Michael Blazek (1-0) pitched two scoreless innings to earn the win, and Kevin Ginkel retired the Shuckers in order to to pick up the save in the ninth.
