The Jackson City Council approved three ordinances during a first reading, and unanimously approved two ordinances on second readings, during their monthly meeting at City Hall, Tuesday.
The Council also heard from representatives from Union University – Lee Benson – and Lane College – Richard Donnell – about a new monument proposal for Shirlene Mercer Walking Park in east Jackson.
The proposed seven pillars or monuments will recognize the contribution of individuals or groups of African Americans instrumental in Jackson’s history.
“I think it will be very instrumental in showing our people of our community the history of that community the people who have paved the way,” said City Councilman Johnny Dodd, “(People who) opened doors for our youth and other people in the community.”
Ryan Porter, chief operating officer and general counsel of the Jackson Chamber updated the Council on a new Dog Park that will be constructed next to the Ballpark at Jackson.
Funds for the park arrived in the form of a $100,000 grant courtesy of the Boyd Foundation.
“There will be one park dividend into two areas,” Porter said. “One will be for large dogs, and one for smaller dogs. There is no local match of funds for the park, and the only required commitment will be to maintain the grounds.”
Jerry Gist, mayor of Jackson, said the Council meeting was productive.
“The sculpture will be a great addition to Shirlene Mercer Park, a lot of visibility,” Gist said. “We (also) handled some property that was donated to Jonah Affordable Housing for the purpose of building three senior living duplexes. So all in all, it was a very productive meeting.”
