Unanimous was the word when the Jackson City Council held its February meeting at City Hall, Tuesday.
Members of the City Council voted on 12 amendments or proposals, with each being approved by a vote of 9-0.
Consideration of Amendment No. 2 and No. 3 approved contracts with Gresham Smith for professional services relating to a former Madison County landfill for improvements required by the Tennessee Department of Environment and Conservation at a cost not to exceed $24,150 (No. 2) and $41,500 for Amendment No. 3.
“We’re having to close an old landfill on highway 70 that was initiated in the late ’70s, and we’re trying to close that through TDEC, our department of environmental conservation,” said Jerry Gist, mayor of Jackson, “We had to get a couple more amendments in order to pay some consultants. We’re trying to get it closed so we can just write it off and still protect who live close to the landfill.”
Surplus property was also sold to businesses and individuals near downtown.
“We sold some property right off Royal and Orleans to a couple of businesses and a couple of individuals that live in that area, who need some additional property,” Gist said.
The three parcels sold for $31,000, $1,490 and $406.50 for a total of $32,896.50.
Also, the City Council approved about 45 acres on the east side of North Parkway East and south of Browns Church Road to be rezoned from Agriculture and Open Land to a Light Industrial District.
Part of property is located in Jackson, and a portion in Madison County, which was annexed at the request of the owner to provide a single source of protection – Jackson Police Department and Jackson Fire Department.
The utilities will be installed by Jackson Energy Authority.
Initially, a 200,000-square-foot warehouse consisting of 20 dock doors and two ground level doors will be developed at the site.
The warehouse will have the capability of expanding to 400,000-square-feet.
