The defense never rests for Jackson Christian’s football team, which is one reason the undefeated Eagles (8-0), sit atop Division II Class A West Region and No. 5 in this week’s Grace Media Group – WNWS.COM Baker’s Dozen area high school football coaches’ poll. CLICK HERE
Jackson Christian is stingy on defense, allowing 202.5 yards per game and 11.7 points per game.
Kaleb Newsome, a senior defensive lineman/running back, and junior Easton Jones, a strong safety/running back, are two of the mainstays on the defensive side of the ball for the Eagles, and their performance in Jackson Christian’s 56-16 win over Lake County, Oct. 13, earned them the Victory Honda of Jackson, NEWS/TALK 101.5 FM, WNWS.COM, high school football ‘Player of the Week’ award.
Kaleb recorded five tackles – two for a loss – and one quarterback sack, while Easton was just as busy, with five tackles, one for a loss, a pass interception, and he found time to block a punt.
“The team is playing together as a group and we are (having) a very good season so far,” Kaleb said, “For me, it’s good, very, very good.”
Easton, who is as soft-spoken as Kaleb, said the opponent changes, but the approach is the same.
“We watch film … we have to take every team serious, and we have to practice hard every day,” Easton said, “It was difficult coming off a bye week, but we have to (concentrate) on a bigger goal.”
Coaches quote –
“Kaleb and Easton work really hard … they do their job well,” said defensive coordinator Rob Phillips, “Each person comes out and practices every day and really does a great job preparing for the offense we are going to face.
“We’re excited to see them recognized for their hard work, but overall, our defense is working really hard this year … working hard to prepare for Harding Academy, Friday.”
