A bill signed by Gov. Bill Haslam in April 2018 became legal Sunday, giving grocery stores the go-ahead to sell wine.
“(Initial) sales were good,” Alan Patterson said, “We’ve had customers who came in from other states who could buy wine on Sundays, and ask, ‘Why not here?’”
Alan Patterson is the produce manager at Grubb’s Grocery, 4 Jackson Walk Plaza.
“Nobody waited until Sunday to buy wine,” Patterson said, “We probably didn’t have someone come in and buy just because it’s Sunday.”
Grubb’s is open noon to 6 p.m., Sundays, 7 a.m. to 8 p.m., Monday through Friday, and 8 a.m. to 8 p.m., Saturdays.
“It made it convenient not having to wait until the next day to buy wine,” Patterson said, “Or buy it the day before.”
The sale of wine on Sundays in grocery stores is one of 30 new laws going into effect in Tennessee in 2019.
