In memory of Jonathan Harlan – LANA holds 25th Annual Flag Day Celebration

The Lambuth Area Neighborhood Association held its 25th annual LANA Flag Day Celebration at Triangle Park, Friday.

Triangle Park intersects North Highland Avenue, West Forest Avenue and Park Avenue.

According to a press release, the Lambuth Area Neighborhood Association has been committed to recognizing and honoring Flag Day.

At its first meeting – June 2, 1994 – the Board of Directors’ first community gathering was Flag Day on the campus of Lambuth University – now the University of Memphis Lambuth.

Flag Day for the LANA community was the idea of Jonathan Harlan, one of the first board members.

Through his vision he saw Flag Day as an opportunity for this new community organization to come together.

This year marks the 25th recognition of Flag Day with flags being displayed at the small triangle park at North Highland and Forest Avenue and Campbell Lake.

For more than a decade, Jonathan Harlan and the board planned a community picnic with live music on the Lambuth University Front Lawn.

It was time for music, children and neighbors cooking casseroles to build a stronger relationship with their neighbors.

The 25th Annual Flag Day Celebration for LANA is in memory of one of our founders and the father of our Flag Day Celebration – Jonathan Harlan.

Jonathan Harlan passed away Nov. 12, 2018.

A ceremony was also planned for historic Campbell Lake at 6 p.m., Friday.

“LANA is grateful for the vision and leadership that Jonathan Harlan provided to our neighborhood,” said Frank McMeen, president of the Lambuth Area Neighborhood Association, “Bringing Flag Day to life in LANA was his dream. It is fitting that we honor Jonathan Harlan and our country’s flag.”

The Lambuth Area Neighborhood Association is Tennessee’s third largest neighborhood, composed of more than 1,500 homes.
