Husband Initially Charged with Second-Degree Murder Has Been
Indicted for First-Degree Murder in August Shooting Death of
His Wife
Michael Smith, Sr., was indicted today by the Madison County Grand Jury for
first-degree murder in the shooting death of his wife, Christy Smith.
Smith remains in custody at the Madison County Jail on $500,000 bond. He is
scheduled to be formally arraigned Monday in Madison County Circuit Court.
Shortly after 10 p.m. on Aug. 9, 2013, police responded to a shooting at 4 Holly
Ridge Cove. Christy Smith, 36, was found dead inside the home from a single
gunshot wound. Investigators determined that Michael Smith, 42, had shot
Christy Smith, and then left the house in his truck.
Police developed information that Michael Smith worked at SAIA Motor Freight
Line at 400 Industrial Drive in Jackson. Officers searched the area and found
Smith's abandoned truck on the property. Police contacted SAIA personnel and
asked to search to building. SAIA personnel responded and allowed police
access.
Upon searching, a police dog found Smith hiding in a bathroom. He was taken
into custody around 1:20 a.m.
Subsequently, Smith was charged with second degree murder.
During the investigation, police found evidence that the murder was premeditated
prompting the more serious charge of first-degree murder.
