Home of Grand Ole Opry earns spot on National Register

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) (March 2, 2015)— The Grand Ole Opry House has been honored with a spot on the National Register of Historic Places in recognition of its impact on popular culture and the entertainment industry.

The theater has played host to the Opry since it opened on March 16, 1974. According to the Opry, that show was a standing-room-only performance attended by President Richard Nixon and first lady Pat Nixon, among others.

The Grand Ole Opry House is the show’s sixth home and the only one built specifically for the Opry.

The distinction comes as the Opry readies for a nine-month celebration of its 90th anniversary to begin with a kick-off show on March 24.
