High census of patients puts hold on outside transfers at Jackson-Madison County General Hospital

Due to the high Census of Patients at Jackson-Madison County General Hospital, the hospital will be temporarily unable to admit patients that are currently admitted in outlying facilities, or patients requiring an ICU bed, or direct admissions.

“This does not apply to emergency room transfers for higher level of care,” said James Ross, West Tennessee Healthcare CEO, “This also does not apply to certain acute heart attack, stroke, or Neonatal ICU cases.

“We are continuing to do surgery as well as other procedures – elective and otherwise.”

Ross said as of 9:30 a.m., Wednesday, Jackson-Madison County General Hospital had an overall census of 573 patients.

“Of that, 103 were COVID-19 positive patients,” Ross said, “Of the 103, 33 of those patients were in ICU (and) of the 33 ICU patients that are positive with Covid-19, 17 are on ventilators.”

Ross said the totals do not include an additional 19 patients that are considered COVID-19 recovered – but are still requiring hospitalization.

“We have three babies that are Patients Under Investigation,” Ross said. “As of 9:30 a.m. (Wednesday), we had 61 quarantined in our system with 18 of those being Registered Nurses.

“At Jackson-Madison County General Hospital alone, we have 35 quarantined of which 10 are Registered Nurses.”
