Chris Smith has been named the head football coach at Haywood High School.

Smith leaves Germantown High School, where he was named the 6 AAAAAA Region 8 Coach of the Year in 2017 and 2018, with the Red Devils completing undefeated regular seasons.

He was also named the National Football Foundation (Memphis Chapter) Rex Dockery Head Coach of the Year.

According to a press release, Haywood officials said when the search began to hire a new head coach to replace Steve Hookfin, who took a similar position in Rogers, Arkansas, they (Haywood) wanted a coach who shared its values, who had demonstrated success, who showed a true commitment to to the overall student-athlete and who believed could lead Haywood to a championship.

“It is our belief that we have found all of that and more in Coach Smith, and we feel that he will be a great fit for the Tomcat family,” said Joey Hassell, superintendent of Haywood Schools.
