The Brownsville Police Department seized a.25 caliber handgun from a 15 year-old Haywood High School student Saturday. Police say the gun was loaded. The young man was attending Saturday School—a mandatory disciplinary program. 

A statement from the Brownsville Police Department reports that a student contacted police and his parent claiming a boy with a gun had threatened him. Police found the weapon when they investigated the threat. The teenager has been charged with possession of a weapon with intent to go armed and possession of a weapon on school grounds.

Brownsville Mayor Bill Rawls says the teen raised the eye of police investigators after being implicated in a shooting last week. That shooting was unrelated to the incident on Young Street which left one Brownsville resident dead and led to the arrest of Tovarious Mason. 

“We cannot have this in our community at any cost,” said Rawls. “It’s disturbing to me that a young man would find it necessary to bring a gun to school, and we are asking the parents in our community to be proactive with their kids so it doesn’t come to that.” Rawls commended police investigators and added that he believes the incident to be an isolated one.

The teenager was reportedly apprehended and searched in front of his mother, and has been charged with possession of a weapon with intent to go armed and possession of a weapon on school grounds.

Police have also charged another Haywood High School student after seizing archery equipment. That incident occurred August 28. According to a release from the BPD, the 16 year-old boy was “using a hunting bow by the football field house.” The student was also charged with possession of a weapon on school grounds.

Haywood County Schools officials did not immediately respond to Point5Digital’s requests for comment on this story.
