Jackson-Madison County School Superintendent-elect Dr. Marlon King has finalized his executive team by naming Greg Hammond to serve as Chief of Staff & Public Information Director for the system.
According to a press release, Hammond, a former sports anchor and reporter at WBBJ, assumes the role after teaching broadcasting at South Side High School for the past 12 years.
“Teaching at my alma mater has been a rewarding experience,” Hammond said, “I’m excited about the opportunity to work alongside administrators and teachers in sharing the district’s mission and vision with the community.”
Hammond’s work has appeared in local television, radio, and newspaper in Jackson since 2002.
He has endeared himself to a younger generation through his social media and video production work for area high schools and with the Commissioner’s Cup rival series he began in 2018.
“Bringing Greg on board is a win for our community on many levels,” said Dr. Marlon King, superintendent of schools, “He brings a wealth of unique experience; from recent experience in each branch of traditional media, to having over a decade of classroom experience in the Jackson Madison County School System.”
Hammond, a Jackson native and South Side High School graduate, earned a Bachelor’s of Arts degree in communications from the University of Tennessee at Martin in 2003.
He began his broadcasting career at WBBJ while he was a student at Jackson State Community College.
After graduating from UTM, Hammond moved to Lexington, Kentucky to work as the sports director at an ABC affiliate.
He returned to Jackson in 2008 to assist in starting the broadcast media program at South Side High School.
Hammond has been a frequent contributor to the Jackson Sun since 2014. “He knows the system, he knows the community, and he knows the work,” Dr. King said.
Hammond is married to former Union University softball standout Megan Quarry. The Hammonds have two children who are students in the public school system.
Hammond will assume his new role on Wednesday, July 1.
