Generals split doubleheader before splitting for Chattanooga

Nothing ventured, nothing gained.

The Jackson Generals let an opportunity to pull within two games of a possible playoff wild card berth slip when they lost 7-3 in 10 innings in the second game of a doubleheader at the Ballpark at Jackson, Thursday.

Joel Payamps pitched a one-hitter, and Kelly Dugan went two-for-three with an RBI for the Generals, in a 4-0 game one win.

In game two, the Generals, who trail second place Montgomery in the Southern League’s North Division by three full games, led Tennessee 2-1 going into the seventh – and final – inning.

The Smokies’ Trey Martin hit a home run to lead off the inning, and three innings later, a four-run 10th gave Tennessee the win, which kept Jackson from gaining ground on Montgomery, which lost 4-0 to Chattanooga.

Tennessee’s David Bote hit a solo home run in the eighth inning to give the Smokies a 3-2 lead, but Jackson’s Victor Reyes answered with a solo shot of his own in the bottom half of the inning to tie matters at 3-3.

The Generals play the next 10 games on the road, and their first stop comes at 6:15 p.m., today, at North Division leading Chattanooga.
