A rain delay that lasted 40 minutes only delayed the inevitable for the Jackson Generals, who fell 8-2 to the Tennessee Smokies at The Ballpark at Jackson, Thursday.
The Generals, the Double-A affiliate of the Arizona Diamondbacks, broke a scoreless tie in the bottom of the fourth when Daulton Varsho scored on a single by Ramon Hernandez.
The Smokies took the lead two innings later, when a Nico Hoerner single scored Ben Zobrist, and Vimael Machin followed with a double that scored Hoerner.
Zobrist, a member of the Chicago Cubs, and the Most Valuable Player in the 2016 World Series, was rehabing.
Zobrist, who played second base for the Smokies, had one hit, walked three times and scored twice in five at bats.
Machin was able to stroll home on a Jared Young triple, and the Smokies led 3-1.
Jackson’s Josh Green lost his third game in five decisions.
He allowed three runs – all earned – six hits, one walk and struck out five in six innings of work.
Jackson could no closer than 3-2, after a Galli Cribbs Jr. double in the bottom of the seventh scored Ryan Grotjohn.
Tennessee, the Double-A affilate of the Chicago Cubs, literally put the game out of reach with a five-run, ninth inning.
The Generals, who remain 4.5 games out of first in the North Division of the Southern League, open a five-game series at Pensacola, today.
Jackson returns home Thursday to close out the 2019 regular season for the first of five games against the Jacksonville Jumbo Shrimp.
