According to published reports, Fred’s, 1688 South Highland Ave., in the Madison South Shopping Plaza, is closing.

The store is one of 159 locations the Memphis-based company is closing in 13 states.

Liquidation sales have started, and discounts range from five percent to 20 percent on most items with some exclusions. The stores are expected to close by the end of May.

Besides the Jackson location, Fred’s is closing stores in Brownsville, Dyersburg, Medina, Paris and Selmer.

The number of closings account for about 29 percent of Fred’s 557 stores, with Mississippi, Alabama, Georgia and Tennessee losing the majority of stores.
