Former UT football stars join Holloway & Butler on the ‘Sports Roundup,’ Saturday

Former UT football stars Don McLeary and Ernie Ward join Joe Holloway and Jimmy Butler – NEWS/TALK 101.5 FM – on The Sports Roundup LISTEN LIVE CLICK HERE from 10 a.m. to noon, Saturday.

Ernie Ward played defensive back for the Volunteers and McLeary – a North Side graduate – was a running back.

Ward, who picked off a pass in the 1974 Liberty Bowl football game, was named to the Liberty Bowl’s all-decade team for the 1970s.

UT’s Randy Wallace threw an 11-yard touchdown pass to Larry Seivers with 2:38 remaining to give the Vols a 7–3 lead over Maryland in the 1974 game.

Maryland drove down the field and reached the Tennessee 20 with less than a minute to go after Frank Russell caught an option pass from Louis Carter.

With nine seconds remaining, Ward intercepted Bob Avellini’s pass at the two-yard line to seal the win.

UT also won the 1970 Liberty Bowl.

Ward, Curt Watson, Bobby Majors and Steve Poole joined coach Bill Battle on the all decade team.

Born in Humboldt, McLeary played varsity football at UT (freshmen were not eligible) from 1968 to 1970.

At Tennessee, McLeary – who has coached on the college and professional level – rushed for 907 yards and 10 touchdowns and added 198 yards and one touchdown on receiving. McLeary graduated from Tennessee with a B.S. in physical education in 1970 and M.S. in educational administration in 1972.
