Former Corrections Officer Charged

SELMER, Tenn. (AP) — A former McNairy County correctional officer is accused of allowing an attack involving two inmates to occur.

The Jackson Sun reports the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation says in a statement that a grand jury returned indictments Monday charging 42-year-old Levis James Scalf with criminal responsibility, official misconduct and official oppression.

Authorities began investigating after receiving a complaint that Scalf had directed and allowed one inmate to assault another while both were confined in the county correctional facility on Sept. 26.

TBI agents say the investigation revealed that Scalf was responsible for allowing the assault to happen.

Scalf turned himself in to authorities on Monday afternoon.

It isn’t immediately clear whether he has an attorney to comment on the charges.
