(March 7, 2014) Jackson, Tenn.- Doug McGowan spoke at the Jackson Downtown Development First Friday Forum luncheon today. He is the director of the Mayors Innovation Delivery Team in Memphis.
That team is charged with changing the conversation about things going on in memphis.
Their two big program areas are Gun violence, and city rehabilitation.
The team tackled the first problem with programs like the 901 BLOC squad, which works to stop retaliatory shootings in gang violence.
McGowan said that it costs tax payers $65,000 per shooting every time a shooting victim goes to the Med in Memphis. The 901 BLOC Squad has worked to stop 15 retaliation shootings.
The City rehabilitation issue was worked on with innovative programs like MEMFix, which promoted businesses to occupy vacant commercial space for a weekend to bring a jolt of revitalization to the area.
