Father drunk on moonshine in crash that killed son convicted

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (AP) — A Knox County man is facing up to 40 years in prison after admitting to drinking a half-gallon of moonshine before crashing his car and killing his 10-year-old son and seriously injuring his 11-year-old nephew.

The Knox County District Attorney General’s office said in a news release that a jury convicted 35-year-old Steven Steelman Jr. on Wednesday of aggravated vehicular homicide, vehicular assault and third offense DUI, among other charges.

Deputies say Steelman admitted to drinking moonshine and taking drugs before getting behind the wheel on Nov. 23, 2014. That day, Steelman lost control of the vehicle and struck a telephone pole and tree.

His son, Steven Steelman III, died from the wreck, while his nephew, Nathan Lawson, suffered multiple spine fractures.

Steelman is scheduled to be sentenced Oct. 27.
