In 1950, Harry S. Truman was President of the United States, gasoline was 27 cents a gallon, 3 cents would get you a postage stamp, a gallon of milk cost 83 cents, and a loaf of bread sold for 12 cents.
The same year, husband and wife Tom and Ginny Sculley built, co-owned, operated and opened the first public golf course in Jackson – Sculley’s Golf Club and Driving Range – at 2162 Westover Road.
Seventy-two years later, Dart Longeway, who is dealing with health issues, has closed the venue where numerous people learned to play the game.
In December 1999, Mrs. Sculley, now deceased, signed a lease-purchase agreement with Dart Longeway, who managed the golf course for the last 23 years.
The property is still owned by Mrs. Sculley’s Trust Fund.
When the nine-hole course opened, the layout was called Skyway Public Golf Course and Driving Range.
Skyway was also the original name of Jackson’s airport, located next door.
