Dream Center approved for move; 71 acres annexed into City for new development

It took a second reading, but the Dream Center received the blessing – and five votes – from members of the Jackson City Council to move to a new 30,000-square-foot facility on Oil Well Road.

A second reading became necessary when the decision to defer was requested by City Councilman David Cisco during the monthly meeting in August.

Cisco represents residents of Belle Trace Cove, which sits just west of where the new Dream Center will now be built.

Cisco, Harvey Buchanan and Charles Rahm voted against the proposal, and Vicky Foote was absent from Tuesday’s meeting due to family issues.

Land was donated to the non-profit by Northside Assembly of God, 27 Oil Well Road.

Additional business conducted by the City Council during Tuesday’s meeting included a unanimous 8-0 vote to consider an ordinance to annex – a resolution to adopt a Plan of Service – and an ordinance to zone an area referred to as “McAlexander Family Partners,” located along the 650 block of Ashport Road, a total of 71.52 acres.

The proposed zoning for this annexation area is for single family residential homes.

“The council approved an annexation, a requested annexation for 71 acres for the construction of new homes for the city,” Jackson Mayor Jerry Gist said. “Obviously, we’ve had a shortage according to our real estate community.

“(These) new homes would range anywhere from $180,000 to $225,000. I think that will be the price range of these homes and (construction) will be underway shortly.”

Consideration of an ordinance to rezone property located at 3131 North Highland Avenue from Office Residential District to General Residential was approved by a unanimous vote.

The property consists of 1.7 acres, and was submitted by Brookdale Jackson Oaks Senior Living.

A unanimous vote approved an ordinance to rezone 1716 South Highland Avenue from Highway Business District to a Planned Unit Commercial Development.

The 1.3 acre proposal was submitted by Chadwick Vaughn.

Proclamations for Domestic Violence Awareness Month and National Night Out were presented during the meeting.
