In 2003, Eric Jones walked into Madison Academic High School as an instructor and head boys basketball and baseball coach.
Fourteen years later, Dr. Eric Jones walked into Madison Academic High School as the superintendent of the Jackson-Madison County School System, which opened for the 2017-18 school year, Friday.
“To go from a teacher and a coach at Madison to now sitting in the superintendent’s seat in a matter of 14 years is very, very humbling, but I’m grateful,” Jones said. “A lot of people along the way have helped me – a lot of friends I’ve made here in Jackson. I really, really love this community, and it’s the reason I came back to serve it.”
Jones left Madison following the 2006 school year to become the assistant principal at Liberty Technology Magnet High School, followed by a one-year stint as interim principal at Liberty for the 2008-09 school year.
For the next four years, Jones served as principal at Jackson Central-Merry High School before leaving the system for J.O. Johnson High School in Huntsville, Alabama.
Before becoming the superintendent of Jackson-Madison County Schools, Jones, who makes his home in Jackson with his wife and two children, was employed by the National Institute for School Leadership in Washington, D.C.
