Decatur County Clerk And Two Employees Resign One Day After Supreme Court Ruling

DECATUR Co. (July 1, 2015) – A Decatur County Commissioner confirms Decatur County Clerk, Gwen Pope, and two employees Sharon Bell, and Mickey Butler have all submitted their resignations.

Sources say the resignations did not specifically state religious views as the reason but they were received the day after the Supreme Court ruling on same-sex marriage. The court ruled states must recognize same-sex marriage rights. The court did not say county clerks must officiate marriages, only that they treat all people the same.

Decatur County officials confirm they have not received any requests for same-sex marriage licenses as of Wednesday afternoon.

The resignations will be effective July 14. The County Commission will meet on July 13 to appoint a new county clerk.

The County Technical Assistance Service (CTAS) will assist with the transition.
