The Madison County Commission met for almost three hours Monday evening, and approved the purchase of property for a new K-8 school.
In a 17-7 vote, the commission approved spending $700,000 for property located on Ashport Road to be used for a new K-8 school.
The property on Ashport has been planned for the K-8 site for more than a year. Recently some members of the Jackson-Madison County school board had been lobbying for a K-8 school to instead be built on an alternate location.
The proposal is for new facilities to replace the 73-year-old Pope Elementary. The school is need of renovation and repairs. Because it is landlocked, many of the needed improvements cannot be made.
