City declares war on illegal Dumping

The city of Jackson has ten new cameras that can read license plate numbers and catch violators in the act.

Jackson City Beautiful and the Jackson Police Department have announced stepped-up efforts to clean up the city and catch those who won’t take time to find a legal dumping area. The City Council has passed an ordinance to address the problem.

Those who leave trash in no-dumping zones now face up to $500 in fines. Judge Blake Anderson
explains the penalty, “The way the new law is written, the punishment depends on the amount that’s dumped. There are four or five options that depend on that. I’ve already imposed up to $500 on several cases. ” There’s even a hall of shame, a gallery that shows the who, what, when, and where of illegal dumping activity.

Illegal dumping not only encourages more dumping but also attracts rodents and insects to
neighborhoods. Cameras are set up at ten locations. According to City Beautiful Coordinator Danielle Wade, the cameras are in place but will be moved on an as-needed basis according to what areas are most affected without signs to let violators know they’re being watched.
