The introduction of an interim fire chief, a check presentation, a resurfacing contract, and two first readings highlighted the Jackson City Council’s monthly meeting at Jackson City Hall, Tuesday.
Darryl W. Samuels Sr., became the interim City of Jackson Fire Chief, September 1, following the retirement of Max Stewart, Friday.
Jackson mayor Jerry Gist appointed Samuels Sr., leaving the hiring of a permanent fire chief to Jackson’s new mayor, who takes office July 1, 2019.
“I’m honored and humbled to serve as interim fire chief for the City of Jackson,” Samuels Sr., said. “The Jackson Fire Department has a long and outstanding history of tradition and pride which allows us to work together as a family – and working together as a family also allows us to continue to serve our community in an extraordinary manner.”
Samuels Sr., who joined the Jackson Fire Department in 1975, served on the operations side of the fire department for more than 19 years.
He retired in 2002 as director of the city’s Central Dispatch, and was rehired in 2009 as a consultant for the Fire Department and Central Dispatch.
The board also approved a resurfacing contract with Delta Contracting for about $1.8 million to have 24 streets resurfaced prior to November 20 or 25.
The City accepted a $50,000 check as a contribution to the City of Jackson Animal Care Center from Kimberly Harville and Dwight Robinson from Waste Management, Incorporated.
A resolution approving the Consolidated Annual Performance and Evaluation Report (CAPER), and the consideration of an Ordinance to rezone properties at southeast quadrant of Bond Street and Holly Street from light industrial to highway business were approved unanimously on first readings.
